Sara Britcliffe and local Hyndburn councillors are celebrating that their campaign for a speed camera at Blackburn Road has been successful.
The Hyndburn and Haslingden MP, county councillor Peter Britcliffe, councillors Marlene Haworth and Zak Khan, along with residents have been calling for safety measures on Blackburn Road in Oswaldtwistle.
Sara launched a ‘Say No to Speed’ campaign on the road and has been dealing with concerns about motorists using the road as a ‘racetrack’, especially at night.
Now, Lancashire County Council has agreed with the MP and confirmed they will install a speed camera on the notorious road.
Sara said: “I have been campaigning for this ever since I was elected for measures there.
“We’ve had site visits with county councillors to show the dangers.
“I have been out there on the road with police when they have been doing speed checks to try to reduce the problem.
“We have received so many people complaining by email and there have been several accidents here throughout the years.
“Residents have been worried about crossing the road in case they get knocked down or hurt.
“We have been battling to put pressure on the county council to do something there.
“I want to thank every resident who has been campaigning and now we are going to be seeing speed cameras in the next few months.
“It has taken a long time to get here. It is positive news for the area.”
According to data on Lancashire County Council website, there have been 29 incidents on the road including a fatality.
Cllr Peter Britcliffe, who is the county councillor for Oswaldtwistle, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we are going to get speeding measures on the road as we have been relentlessly campaigning this in my case from day one when I became a county councillor. Hopefully, that will slow the traffic down.”
Lancashire County Council has confirmed that they are looking to install the measure in the next three months.
