MP’s plans for new business champion to be taken on by council
Businesses across Hyndburn are to get a boost thanks to local MP Sara Britcliffe.
After the Conservative MP contacted council officers suggesting they look at new ways of creating growth they have now agreed to take on an Economic Development Officer.
Sara wrote to Labour Council Leader Miles Parkinson last October, on why she thought it was vital the region capitalises on the Prime Minister’s plans for levelling up, ensuring that Hyndburn and Haslingden is helped to create new economic opportunities, with a dedicated officer looking to help attract investment to the area.
She said: “Coronavirus has put a strain on everyone and has particularly effected businesses, jobs and livelihoods, nationally and in Hyndburn."
“I am very proud of our community, who have risen to the challenges facing them during this difficult time. The Government is working hard to stimulate economic investment across the country, and we need to be in position to capitalise."
“New economic opportunities are now on offer and it is vital that we create an environment here in Hyndburn to support business prosperity, attract investment and develop the skills needed."
“Therefore, I believe it is necessary for Hyndbum council to create a position for an Economic Development Officer to carry out several key functions including business engagement and support, build local networks, business communications, identify skill challenges and opportunities and work to deliver solutions.”
Sara added that she envisaged that the person in the role could be responsible for developing local projects for business growth, bidding for local and national funding, setting up training schemes and promoting the local economic area.
She said: “Many other local councils already have an Economic Development Officer in placeand from discussions that I have had, the role has been a very positive addition to the council.
“It is vital that Hyndburn council now invest in the future and build on our strengths, such as ourbrilliant businesses, entrepreneurs and our community spirit.”
