Sara Britcliffe, Member of Parliament for Hyndburn and Haslingden, spoke in parliament on Wednesday 28 June regarding childcare reform and the government’s new 30 hours of free childcare policy.
The MP took the opportunity to ask Claire Coutinho MP, an education minister, how she is ensuring that local authorities and childcare providers are being supported financially to prepare for the looming change, which will see millions of young families benefit from 30 hours of free childcare per week.
Currently working parents or carers of children aged three to four in England are currently entitled to 30 hours free childcare a week and all parents of children aged three to four can access 15 hours of free childcare. At the Spring Budget 2023, the Government announced that 30 hours of free childcare will be expanded to parents of eligible children over the age of nine months. Changes will start from April 2024 and be fully in force by September 2025.
